NewsGrazer crashes -- too many groups?
#598

Hi,

Our newsgroup count recently passwd the 1500 mark and we
ended up having to recompile rn. Now, we've noticed that
NewsGrazer isn't working anymore either. It starts up and
chews on the active file for a little while and then quits
with a "Bus Error".
Is there anyone out there with any ideas on how to proceed?

Thanks,

Chris

It turns out the problem is not due to the number of newsgroups
we have. Rather, it is due to number of dots in a newsgroup name.
Someone recently created the following two bogus newsgroups:

alt.music.pop.will.eat.itself.the.poppies.are.on.patrol
alt.music.pop.will.eat.itself.X.Y.and.Z.electrix.sunshine.mix

NewsGrazer crashes with a "Bus Error" message when it sees groups,
such as these, with 10 (or more) dots in the name. The solution
is to remove these bogus groups (ask your news admin).

Pascal Chesnais (lacsap@plethora.media.mit.edu) says that NeXT
has a version of NewsGrazer which fixes this, but is not releasing
it yet.

Thanks again -- Chris
