Hello, all: I am trying to get my NeXT to print to another NeXT and its NeXT Laser without setting us both up as a Netinfo domain. Can one do it? How? Is it similar to setting up lpr to a non-NeXT printer (in other words, should I use nidump, edit the printcap file, and then niload it again)? Can someone send an example of their printcap? I appreciate it. BTW, a second question: can one print a WordPerfect (or any other) binary file to a file, as in WP for DOS or WP for Windows? I think I need to do that to lpr to the LPD server (it uses Ka9q) on a binary file. I cannot seem to find this capability, and I am sure I would need the techniques for non-WordPerfect files also. any help is appreciated. thanks, Joe -- ________ Joe Rosenfeld cowboy@trans.csuohio.edu Automation Librarian joer@inca.law.csuohio.edu Cleveland State University Law Library

I don't know why it can't behave like a normal BSD/lpd/printcap printer when NetInfo is not being used. A lot of people are scared about turning on NetInfo - I know I was at first. NetInfo will happily run without interfering with you or even NIS. Go ahead and use it! > BTW, a second question: can one print a WordPerfect (or any other) binary > file to a file, as in WP for DOS or WP for Windows? Otherwise you'd have to save it to a different format and print it via some other utility (say, lpr). I don't know what happens in 3.0 with the support for non-PostScript printers like the Epsons, etc. Can you print to a file with those? Any 3.0 users? -- David A. I have had no problems remote-printing from another machine (HP
9000/345) to my NeXT, so I don't see why it should not be possible
between two NeXT-en (is that the correct plural;)?), using the uslual
printcap entry, like:
phps|Physics Apple Laserwriter :\
:lp=:rm=hydra.acs.uci.edu:rp=gadget:\
:sd=/usr/spool/lpd/phps:\
:lf=/usr/adm/lpd-errs:
(replace the rm and rp with the correct names on your system), and
enter the "other" system in each /etc/host.lpd file.
Oh yes, don't forget to niload the modified printcap back into netinfo
memory.
[I usually nidump critical files like princap, passwd, fstab, each
night, so I have up-to-date copies to work with as backups, in case
netinfo gets corrupted.]
