My next-door neighbor is VP for IS at a Fortune 500 company, and they
will only buy Unix for the desktop. Sure, it costs a bit more for
wordprocessors and spreadsheets, but they spend most of their IS budget
on custom and semi-custom DB applications, and developing such under
Unix is an order of magnitude less expensive than developing them on
the glorified program loaders that Apple and Microsoft call operating
systems.
