(Since this is Xposted to comp.sys.intel, a rumour from an old friend said
that the P7 was projected for early '99. Is that true?)

This has been discussed time after time... unless some new data have come
up that I've missed your case seems... simplified.
The discussion I've seen all to much of here goes more like:
The IBM 604-based systems (as you write about above? The Motorola got good
SPEC results per MHz, right?) seems to have problems. The chip probably
will do better in a bit later generation of computers with better
compilers. They still give better SPECs than any Pentium (-: or P6 :-)
systems you can buy today...
I've still not seen any figures that got the specialised systems used by
Intel internally with their compilers. (Some Intel guy posted that the
systems could be bought somewhere, but I didn't see any answers to my
question of prices, availability and benchmarks.)
Comparing figures for *real systems* to (-: half mythical :-) systems with
another processor and claiming it's a good comparision, as you do above,
do seem a bit... nonstrict. Also, the IBM systems has a new processor that
probably has lots to gain in systems the coming 6 months like P6 probably
will in it's generations.
Either I've missed lots of facts or you're getting close to all those
BlackholeQ clones in your arguing, with a *bit* better facts still,
though. (-: Is it contagious? Maybe I should stop trying to skim this
group? :-)
