Geez, do you consider everything beyond certain kinds of file i/o and timesharing to be use of an application rather than the OS? Also, I thought this thread was about how much/little computers had advanced in the past decade or so, not the difference between applications and OSes. In response to your response: -WYSIWIG: Keeps me from printing out sliced up garbage when I print spreadsheets with different fonts. -GUI: Keeps me from having to type in dozens of 10+ character filenames when I want to delete a portion of what's in a directory. This also makes it easy to modify the OS by dragging in and out functions that I don't want. -Cut & Paste: Nice when I want to transfer a graphic to my word processing document. It's also a fast way to copy text from the middle of a word processing document to the middle of a spreadsheet. -24 bit Color: Don't you Unix types use computers for anything besides database manipulation and file transfers? :-) Please see "Video" below. -Video: Whether you classify Quicktime as an application or OS extension doesn't change the fact that it wasn't done fifteen years ago. Personally, I would much rather have video conferencing than POTS. -Voice Recognition: As much a part of the Mac OS as Quicktime. There are many times when I'm doing something away from the computer and would like to direct it without having to go over and type in a bunch of commands. This would also be a cool remote control system for a computer with video-in. James DeBenedetti (jdredd@ns.net) Be pure. Be vigilant. BEHAVE!
