Well, I've run Linux on a 386sx-16 with 4 megs of RAM.. this is 1986
vintage. It runs fine.
Also, On my 486slc2-66 with 10 megs of RAM, it will run great.. I can
start many programs 8-). I've had 10 people on at once, with little speed
degradation.. I once had 2 programs compiling, xv (a picture viewer) and
netscape open. It was a little slow but quite useable speed. Now *this* is
using memory efficiently 8-).
In 4 megs of RAM.. X is more or less out without quite a bit of
tweaking (although it'll run, and if you just use a machine as a *display*,
running the apps on another machine, it'll work okay in 4.) , but SVGAlib
(full screen graphics programs.. mainly games..) run fine (I ran LinuxDoom
and LinuxDoom II in 4megs, and it worked okay once it did it's ~2 minutes of
startup..) and text programs will run very very well in this much too.. and
unlike in with Micrsoft products, you don't have to choose between 16-bit
640K of RAM programs and graphical programs.. it uses up to 3 gigs of RAM
and umm... I dunno a hell of a lot of swap, either with graphics *or* text
programs.
And of course, M$ doesn't write anything for Linux, so I have no M$
programs there..
