quite possible.  my brief research turned up some theoretical papers
on distributed file systems in 1978 and a working implementation in
1980.  so even granting distributed file systems to the 1980s is
pushing it.

i think the OS people have been working mostly on tweaking,
networking, and keeping up with the rapid onslaught of new processors.
the 80s and 90s have been a period of rapid _hardware_ evolution.
