: True, as Apple offers huge discounts to get Macs in the door. I'm not
: aware of a PC manufacturer that does this.
Apple also has the highest profit-margins in the personal computer
industry. They can give huge discounts because they can afford to.
AN example: the 7500/500MB goes for $2699, Apple PRice. At least one
educational institution sells it at their cost for $1995.
I don't know how much Apple makes from educational sales, but they can't
dump systems, so the cost to make, package and ship a 7500 is not more
than $1995, and probably a lot less (Apple gets about 25% profit right
now off of their systems, so if the cost to a retailer is $1995, the cost
to Apple is ~25% less than that, or about $1500. My own opinion is that
the 7500 is counted as a "High end" system, where the profit-margins are
in the 30-40% range, making Apple's cost about $1200 or even less.
Plenty of room for price discounts for education, and for later price warz.
: As well, Macs are desirable in homes due to their ease of use. We'll
: see where the numbers are in a year after Win95's been on the market
: for a while and people learn that PC's are no longer something to be
: feared (just Microsoft is). :)
Mac users are spoiled compared to PC users. If a Mac product isn't plug
and play, the Mac user sends it back. If a Windows 95 product isn't plug
and play, the user is likely to deal with it as they have with Windows
3.1 products and futz with it for days until it works right.
I don't see Windows 95 as a compelling reason NOT to buy a Mac, if you
were still undecided on the subject before it shipped. THe touted
ease-of-use of WIndows 95 is only incomparison to Windows 3.1, according
to PC Magazine. They rank "ease of use/setup" as "good" for Windows 95
and "Excellent" for System 7.5.
