I found that gcc-2.6.3 breaks some things. For instance, amd always
compiles cleanly under 2.5.8, but trying to make amd under 2.6.3 results
in errors and failure.
I'll take a look at 2.7.0 and see if that fixes things, but for now,
I'm sticking with a slackware 2.1 system souped up with upgraded libs,
kernel and utilities...

FreeBSD install was really slick. You just boot with the install floppy,
answer some questions, then sit back and enjoy the show. On my system, I
specified the partition sizes, the sort of distribution I wanted,
and a few miscellaneous questions, pressed the "Commit" button, and
the machine did the rest. It created ufs filesystems, went out and ftp'd
the FreeBSD distribution, installed it, and then brought up a configuration
menu to prompt me for a few system parameters.

I rebooted, and presto - I'm a proud papa.

On the other hand, I had to go out and get bash, tcsh, fvwm, etc,
but they all compiled cleanly, while I was compiling a new kernel...

The networking stuff is all there, and it all works, including things
that I haven't seen yet for Linux -

I can see FreeBSD running mission critical stuff, with Linux, dos and
windows machines on the desktop...
