I don't know if you had a typo in the above sentence --- if not:
Linux certainly had shared libraries LOOOONG before October 1993.
I am pretty sure Linux even had them by October 1992. I just found a
"less" executable which was compile with jumptable-library libc4.1,
and it is dated Dec 22, 1992. I am pretty positive that before the
jumptable shared libraries, there was the libc2.2.2 kind of shared libraries
that couldn't be upgraded at all, but were shared nonetheless
(and somewhen in 93, some cracker managed to delete my copies of them,
rendering a whole bunch of old executables useless. No backups back then...)

Well, the BSD crowd _also_ agreed to settling out of court, so that cuts
both ways. And the settlement marked a few files as contaminated, which
forced the move over to BSD4.4Lite as the base (something which would
probably have happened, anyway, but there still was a considerable
development effort wasted on the forced transition).

Of course, these days the legal side is pretty much sorted out. But
back in those days, when you didn''t know whether *BSD was going to
survive the lawsuit, many people chose the certainly clean Linux over
the allegedly clean, but claimed unclean by USL, *BSD.

All to true.....
