Make no bones about it, Apple is in deep do-do. > >(Washington Times, 1/15/96, section A11) I vowed not to post to this thread, but here goes: 1) From what I've seen, Apple is reporting a $35 million loss for Q4 1995. 2) Apple has, from the last figures I've seen, over $1 billion in liquid assets, a.k.a. cash on hand. 3) Apple lost money this quarter and this quarter only. 4) Apple lost money this quarter while at the same time a) selling record numbers of Macintoshes and b) making record revenues. 5) Apple's management has been under fire for some time, even from very strong members of the Mac community. They've made some whopping blunders (like failing to anticipate strong demands for their products) while at the same time introducing some nicely innovative hardware and software. 6) Just because Apple's management may be bad (and is likely to see some restructuring) says little about the underlying strength of the company. 7) If even an industry giant such as Microsoft failed to predict the rise of the Internet, I would hardly trust the Wall Street Journal or the Washington Times to have a good feeling for the future of the computer industry. 8) The most likely scenario is that some heads will roll at Apple and then business will continue as usual. There will be no takeover from another company (Apple has more than enough money to resist a hostile takeover, and a merger is unlikely). Apple will not suddenly vanish; nor will it take over 45% of the computer industry. Just remember that juicy rumors sell more newspapers than dry facts. Let's try to get this discussion on an even keel, shall we? Or better yet, just end it. -- KEN FAIR - U.
