I can believe this. Netscape, in particular. :-)

However, at least with respect to gcc, gdb, and trn, have you been
able to reproduce the crashes consistently? I'd imagine that gcc
would be easy to reproduce...just recompile your program again. :-)

In any case, the developers of gcc, gdb, and trn would certainly be
very interested in knowing of any crashes and how you produced them.

Of course, I have to also ask what versions of these you were using...

I do agree with you to some extent about program crashes. The Mac
forces you to be a lot more careful about how you write your program
because so much more is at stake if you don't do it right.

On the other hand, the Mac doesn't provide any protection at all if
the programmer didn't happen to do it *exactly* right.

If I had to choose between the Mac and Unix for a development
environment, I'd choose Unix. I can code my programs carefully
regardless of which system I use, but Unix will allow me to more
quickly find and fix bugs than the Mac will, if only because I can use
tools like Purify and Electric Fence (though Purify isn't available
for Linux as far as I know...wish it were).
