The users of unix are usually higher ed, engineering, and vertical apps (usually AROUND engineering or data input, etc.).... it is not the mainstream - which is what many people think of when they think of user driven. So it is true that Unicies are driven by ITS users - but its users are a bunch of bit-bashers or poindexters (no offense, I sometimes fall in those catagories myself). As such they are getting more narrowed for THEIR users, and less usable for users at large. Do not get me wrong. I can see Unix as being THE weapon of choice for data acquisition, servers, engineers, higher-ed. Just NOT for the common man... and every effort to bring Unix to the masses has been a raging flop, and likely always will. (As are many of the UI's on unix). Sadly NT is doing a better job of creating a good enough design for doing engineering and data acquisition, serving, etc... and has a better unified interface... and feels more consistant from variant to variant... AND has a marketing behemoth behind it. While I doubt that will displace Unix in higher-ed, and many labs where everyone comes from higher-ed (unless MS starting GIVING it to them) - it does seem to make a dent in the server market, and likely will continue to do so. -- David K.
