Yes & No. If the Mac does NOT have the App that created it, it pops up a list of Apps that CAN read that doc type (through automatic translators). You chose. You can also set it up to AUTOMATICALLY open a particular type to a particular app, and do the translation automatically. You can also do the same for PC files whith the ".txt" suffix thing. So that PC files will be automatically loaded into the app of your choice. (Otherwise it will give you a list of translators/apps). Also you can drop the file on ANY applications icon that can recognize that data type. For most power Mac users (or is that Mac power users?!) they have an icon bar on the bottom of the screen with the apps they use represented, and they can drop the same file type onto any app that can accept that type. The Mac way allows for you to set up your favorite applications for editing a type, and then autoload them by default. You can even remap to one application despite having the files REAL application on the Hard Drive/network (though I have not done this, so am not sure how well it works). About the worst part of the Mac is sometimes it is too damn smart. Say you have 4 network volumes, and you double click a word file knowing that YOU do not have word. Well if word is on one of those networked drives, the Mac WILL find word out there, and run it for you (if you have those priveledges). Sometimes this can be just too damn smart.... if course if I wasn't so lazy I'd remap MicrosoftTurd (oops, Word) type/creator to one of MY prefered apps, and problem solved. -- David K.
