I don't want to rehash the "I can do 4525435626 bps on my builtin serial
port" thread, but for really high speed modem file transfer, the Amiga
_should_ at least be equipped with an add on.

How would you do that? Through the second high speed modem? You will
certainly get into trouble when you try to do it that way. Ethernet? Now
that's a real option for most people....

>: running tape backup, (Is a Zip drive OK?)

No, a ZIP drive is _not_ OK. Tape drives are pretty nasty things, because
they want to stream. Even the old QIC tapes were able to do up to 6M/s, DAT
drives are a lot faster. And that is not 6M/s _on average_, but if at any
time the computer can't supply that data rate, the tape will have to be
stopped, rewound a bit, stopped again, started in forward direction, and
then the block will be written. Providing a tape with enough data is pretty
tricky, and the interaction between the backup program, the filesystem and the
tape driver can very easily screw up. Not to mention the problem when both
harddisk and tape are on the same SCSI bus.

A ZIP drive, in comparison, will just take another rotation. It probably
spins faster than a HD disk, which already takes only 0.2s per rotation.

So, actually, I don't believe the average Amiga is quite up to that task.
Neither is the average 386. A 486 with FIFO UARTs should manage fine, when
give the right OS. I doubt that OS would be Windows95, though
