: I see no architectural reason why the PPC can't be used to build SMP boxes
: in exactly the same way that there are multiprocessor x86 machines,
: multiprocessor Alpha machines, multiprocessor R4k machines..

There are SMP 604s, but I'm talking about home systems (ie affordable
personal computers) and not high end task specific mission critical
servers/workstations, et cetera. The personal computing market shar is
the most important one to Apple, Intel, and Microsoft.

: Frankly, I'm not that impressed with the P6's figures. It's offering about
: the same SPECint/Mhz that the PPC is offering NOW (a la Powermac 9500).
: And Intel don't seem to be saying what the SPECfp is going to be, which
: doesn't fill me with confidence!

Those are the inital stats for the P6 133. The 200 will be ou shortly.
Besides, whether or not the performance dazzles you, the archetecture of
the chipset is superior now, and the next generation will really bring
the most out of the proc.

: Not that I want to use a Mac... An SMP NT box will do me just fine :)
