Nope- they said 30 million _sold_. Even the most pessimistic prediction from the "experts" was on the order of 16 million. Hell, even Sangria was more optimistic than to predict 7 million... : The 7 million figure is about two months worth of sales- not 1995. Nope. The 7 million was for August-December. Actually, they sold more like 10 million, but three million were returned. And not everyone believes that all of those 7 million were actually kept in use. I know that most of the companies I've dealt with that have bought new computers format the hard drive first and install Windows 3.1 instead of W95... : They were all sell-throughs. Nope. About four million of the 7 million were preloads. So only about three million people actually *bought* Windows 95... -- Chad Irby / My greatest fear: that future generations will, cirby@gate.net / for some reason, refer to me as an "optimist."

About four million of the 7 million were preloads. So only about >three million people actually *bought* Windows 95... The Wall St journal reported 7 million sold in the 3rd quarter (OEM and retail upgrades) for August-September and a total (approx) of 17 - 19 million by the end of the year, with no break out for OEM/retail. Most analysts guestimates before the launch were in the 20 - 30 million range, with Dataquest at the high end (30M). The article also said that at about 18M units in 4.5 months it is the best selling software package ever in that amount of time. True, Win95 did not do as well as some projected, hoped or wanted it to. It is still a bigger hit than Win 3.0 or Win 3.1 were in the same amount of time and in percent of market gained. Two years after Win 3.0 was launched, DOS applications still outsold Win apps. Please give me a press release from Dataquest stating sold. The last I read, was when they were downgrading their estimates to 16.8 million or so- from "20 million sold, 30 million shipped". That was in Infoworld/PC Week. >: The 7 million figure is about two months worth of sales- not 1995. > >Nope. The 7 million was for August-December. NO, IT WAS NOT. Microsoft has NOT release sales figures yet. Where are you getting this tripe? >: They were all sell-throughs. > >Nope. About four million of the 7 million were preloads. So only about >three million people actually *bought* Windows 95... You don't understand the term "sell through", do you? It means copies _sold to customers_. Being shipped on a PC counts, as long as it's not in the warehouse or factory.

Even I thought the 16 Million copies was a gimmie, because of preloads. Time to polish some of the scratches out of my crystal ball. Chris -- Speaking only for myself, of course.
