     You're being sarcastic, right?!
I want my optical mouse back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Actually, our three older systems still have the superior optical mice,
so I'm only annoyed when I have to use our new Indigo that has the crummy
machanical mouse. I have yet to hear any one give me an inteligent reason
why they prefer machanical mice. You still need a pad for them. The balls
tend to `jam' and jurk. They are heavy. And most of all they are machanical,
so they have parts that easily ware out, get dirty, etc..
SGI read my electrons! Give us back our optical mice!

Most of our users feel the same way. Whenever we are forced to
replace an optical mouse with a mechanical mouse, loud groans are heard.
I, too, prefer the optical.

A better question: Is there someplace that sells third-party optical
mice for the various models of SGI? I would LOVE to put optical mice on
our newer machines (actually, we've got a couple of IBMs that I'd love
to put optical mice on as well).

Similarly, where can I get new MICE PADS? (some of ours are incredibly
old and well-used).

Mouse Systems sells an optical mouse that works with SGI machines, which
is gold sealed by SGI, which I believe means you can buy it from SGI
directly.

Mouse Systems also sells a similar 3-button optical mouse that will work
with the RS/6000, but unfortunately it is sorta brain dead and the
middle mouse button will *not* work (the IBM PS/2 mouse protocol only
defines 2 buttons, but most mice do 3 buttons the same way including
Logitech (makes the RS/6000 mouse) and even newer Mouse Systems mice).

In response to comments expressing preference for optical mice: I guess I
must be strange - I prefer the new mechanical mouse that comes with the
Indigo.

Three people in our group here with PI 4D/35s give a thumbs up for the
newer mechanical mice. They seem to move much smoother and give you
a greater sense of control. Some people I know with older systems who
have tried both wish they could have a mechanical mouse instead. The only
people I know who didn't like the mechanical mouse are those who didn't
use it with a pad (their systems weren't shipped with one). After they
got a good pad, it worked fine for them. Our PIs didn't come with pads
either, but after we called SGI about it they sent us some nice thick
rubber backed pads which work great. And using alcohol on the metal
rollers to clean off the gunk really helps to keep them in perfect working
order as a previous poster suggested.

We are using the SGI "Global Vision" pads on most machines. What kind
of experiences have peole had with them?
