problem upgrading from R3K to R4K Indigo

I am trying to upgrade an Indigo Elan from R3000 to R4000 and have run
into a bit of a problem: when I try to boot the machine (with R4000)
installed, I get the following error message:

  Cannot load scsi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(8)/sash
Unable to load bootfile: not enough space

Also, if I try running diagnostics from the PROM monitor, I get:

  Cannot load scsi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(8)ide
  Error 16 while loading scsi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(8)ide

I have no problem booting the machine from CD (which I did to upgrade
to 4.0.5F). Also, if I replace the old R3000 board, the machine boots
fine as well.

Any suggestions?

-Terry

You need to re-install software with the R4000 board installed. It
should be detailed in the release notes for the upgrade.

Sounds as though you somehow used fx to decrease the size of the
volume header below the size used by sash and other program in
the volhdr.

16 is the arcs ENOMEM. Sounds like the ide in the volume header
may have been trashed.

I assume you mean you can boot from CD; it certainly shouldn't boot
from disk if the upgrade was completed OK.

I've not heard of people having these problems before; perhaps you
can describe what, if anything, you did after installing the new
software that might have been 'unusual'.

Funny thing. That's exactly what I did... but it still didn't boot
(same error). I booted the Indigo using a 4.0.5F (Indigo/Reality
Engine only) CD, upgraded from that disc, then used the 4.0.5F
maintenance disc. No luck...

Further info on the system: 32 MB RAM, 432 MB disk, Elan graphics. The
system had been upgraded to 4.0.5F with the Elan upgrade (a few weeks
back). After installing the R4K board and trying to upgrade from CD,
inst did not seem to try and add very much at all.

This may be the error I was getting in similar circumstances. This was
caused by an aborted installation which left the pointer to the swap
partition pointing to 0 rather than 1. I had to boot fx off the CD and
change it back.

Cheers,

Before you start thinking you have a disk problem, let me ask
one question. After you did your upgrade, and you were re-installing
your operating system, did you first set the NEWEROVERIDE flag
to true and force inst to re-install EOE1?

The error message you received is EXACTLY the one I received after
doing the R3K -> R4K and re-installing the software. However,
since IRIX 4.0.5F was already installed, inst left the old
R3K unix kernel on which gives the above error.

I did post a warning to this effect about a month ago and asked
SGI to add this information to the release notes for the upgrade.
IMHO, the problem is INST is semi-smart. It's smart enough to
know that your installation software is at the same release level
as what is already on the disk -- but it's not smart enough to
know that it's the wrong software for your new CPU :)

Deja Vu; we just went over this last week. You didn't do 'set neweroverride'
before reinstalling the software. This could have been made clearer
in the release notes, but it is documented in the Installation Guide.
