24-bit Motif visual?

Maybe I am just too dense to see the obvious, but how can I have a Motif
application come up with a 24-bit shell? I need a 24-bit DrawingArea, and
I can't use a GLX widget because that would be nonportable.

Trying to fiddle with the shell XmNvisual is either ignored or terminates
the application. Replacing XtAppInitialize() with an explicit Xt incantation
and supplying appropriate arguments to XtAppCreateShell() doesn't help
either. I always get "Visual: 0x25 (8 bit PseudoColor)" (says xwininfo).

Thanks for your help,

Thomas

install the Motif overlay demos and then look at
/usr/src/X11/motif/overlay_demos/README. While it concentrates on
overlays, what it says applies to all non-default visuals.

Also:
	* Pay attention to the README that will be installed when you follow
Joel's advice. It is quite useful for understanding dealing with
non-standard visulas in general from Xt, not just Motif.

	* see Section 4.8 "Programming with Nondefault Visuals" in the
	  IRIX/Motif Programming Notes pamphlet.
