SGI CDROM on a 386

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to use a CDROM drive
that SGI has customized on anything but an SGI machine.
I'd like my CDROM drive to timeshare between a Personal IRIS
and a PC. I'm using an Adaptec SCSI controller card in a 386, but
as far as I can tell this setup is hopeless.

If anyone has had any experience at all with this sort of problem
I'd really appreciate some help.

I've hooked up our SGI CD-ROM (a Toshiba XM 1971) to my 486 using an
Adaptec 1542B. The CDROM is a normal, bare SCSI device in all ways
except one. If your system asks it what kind of device it is, the
CDROM states that it is a fixed hard drive! I understand that this
is done because the older SGI machines will only boot from a tape or
fixed drive, and not a removable drive.

I'm running 386BSD so I was able to do some things in my system to
get the drive working. I'm not sure if it's possible to get it
working through any other system.
