I've been checking out the Sunon fan catalogs and there are quite a number of possible substitutes to make machines quiter. The trouble is picking ones that are stocked by suppliers but there is a good enough selection sold by places like Jameco (in the US), etc. to get some ideas. As for disks, replacing drives with ones that have fluid bearings is the way to go for super-quiet disk operation, but I don't know how they're going cost-wise as I haven't shopped for new drives for quite some time other than scoring a nice new 73 GB FCAL drive to go in the SB1000 system.
