It can be done, likewise with booting from a CD-ROM. You are better off to
not even bother looking at SunOS and try out a supported OS like NetBSD. I'm
not sure if Gentoo Linux has a port for the Sun-3/3x systems but there might
be another open-source Linux port which does.
