What is actually happening is that the kernel is gaining control of the
system from the bootrom, and altering the serial port parameters. When the
bootrom is in control, the format is 9600 bps, 8 data bits, no parity, but
after the swap/dump sizing and initialisation is done, the kernel gains
control (this is when the LED will stop flashing and stay on all the time)
and changes the parameters to 9600 bps, 7 data bits, even parity.

All of the Sun machines I've used do the same thing. Once the kernel gains
control, the serial port parameters are changed.

Providing you're not bringing the machine up in single-user mode, you
should be able telnet in once you've configured the IP address in
/etc/hosts, added the ethernet address to /etc/ethers, and configured the
netmask. I'm running here with a small subnet, so I can't use
/etc/netmasks to set this up (unless I use class C addresses, entries in
/etc/netmasks are ignored).

I hardwire the netmask in /etc/rc.local as part of the initial 'ifconfig'
invocation to bring up all the known interfaces.

The reason is as I just mentioned earlier.

Craig.
