Considering all the really stupid mistakes that computer companies
make, using a MK48T02 in the Sun 3/80 and Sparcstations was only a
small blunder. It didn't bankrupt the company. Sun got its money and
the users didn't have problems until years later. The SGS Thomson
M48T02 replacement is good for 10 years. I'd be inclined to chop off
the top of the old MK48T02, remove the clock crystal and resolder it
and then glue and solder on a surface mount battery holder. Then you'd
have what they sould have done in the first place. Have a way to
replace the battery for $1 to $3 instead of the $50 to $150 Sun
charges.
