problems with cg8 in 3/60

I recently ordered a cg8 24 bit colour frame buffer (Sun part # 501-1371)
for my 3/60, It arrived yesterday and when I installed it the machine
would not start up. It did not even come past the self-tests and bring up
the ROM monitor. I know that people have cg8's running happily in their
3/60's, so is there a trick here? I'm under the impression that P4 bus
cg8's don't give any problems (only the VME cg9 versions do) so is this
incorrect?

What it does is this - when the machine is powered up with the HIGHRES
jumper fitted on the main board, the status LED's oscillate at an
incredible rate (much faster than when the machine is running a Unix
kernel), then after a couple of seconds freeze in the all on state.

If I power up with the HIGHRES jumper removed the LED's freeze in the all-on
state immediately.

My monitor recognises a video signal coming from the card (it's parameters
show up on the LCD display), but there is no recognisable image, just a
jittery grey-like full-screen-sized box that is only visible if I turn the
brightness and contrast controls nearly to maximum.

I re-installed my cg6 and the machine worked fine.

My 3/60 (with 12 meg of RAM) has a v3.0.1 bootrom installed, which is the
last version for this machine. It supports cg6 cards, and is supposed to
support cg8's as well. The cg8 itself has a ROM on it with Sun part #
523-2113-01 on the label over the clear window.

I'm willing to listen to any suggestions that you might have.

Regards,

Craig.
