You have an inherit Unix restriction here...

2 ^ 32 = 4294967296            -  Is the maximum file system and file size
				  that most (all?) unix systems currently
				  support at present.
2 ^ 64 = 18446744073709551616  -  May be what we might see some day...

Both. Raid 0 -> 5 (7?) are just names for a variety of disk
manipulation methods. Raid 0 is disk stripping (?), 1 is simple
mirroring.. (I think..) On the Pyramid system (and Olivetti SVR4) -
this is done via software - rather than in hardware (disk
controllers). The disks are thus seen logically. There is no problem
making multiple stripped/mirrored 4 Gig file systems.

Why go for a single 8 Gig file system? Most database systems using
Raw Disk (eg - Oracle, Informix) allow you to specify multiple raw
file systems. I'd hate to see a single 'unix' file system so large -
and running FSCK on it. You don't want to build a flat file system
with lotsa little files in it do you? (cringe :-}

Again - I've configured machines with 10+ Gig of disks - but never had
a need to make it all a 'single' file system.
