Redhat 4.2 - 5.2 upgrade dilemma

Ok.. I finally found a distribution mirror with all the sparc RPM's
on it (a tough job, let me tell you) and installed 5.2 on top of my
4.2 installation, expecting things to go as smooth as they did
with 4.2. This seemed to be a mistake....

A quick background of my system:

SS5, 128MB, no video/mouse/kb (serial console)
SCSI HD, 2.2 GB drive

boot prom is setup to auto-load from the SCSI drive
with the args "linux serial" passed into SILO.....

With RH 4.2, the boot would go fine through the serial console
and tell me as it started each daemon, etc... It would mount
/dev/sda1 on / read-only, run fsck, remount it read-write,
and then go to a login prompt (at which time I switched to my
Intel RH 5.2 box and connected through X/rlogin)

What happens NOW is:

The boot comes up fine, I see the kernel unpack and begin
crunching away, I see it find my scsi, ethernet, etc. It mounts
the root filesystem readonly, then the last thing I see is this:

Freeing unused kernel memory: 40k code, 4k data

And that's it... It BOOTS from here! It eventually even drops
me to a login prompt, BUT... Here's what I've found so far:

1) I don't get any visual feedback from the rc.d as it boots
through the init levels. Frustrating but not a showstopper.

2) When booted, /etc/mtab is full of garbage, and it looks to
me like it's some of what I was missing from #1... I modified
rc.sysinit to do a "rm -f /etc/mtab" then a "touch /etc/mtab"
instead, and it seemed to work better.. BUT this could be
due to problem #3

3) Rebooting again finds me in a READONLY filesystem.
Since I can't see the boot-time initialization, I can't see
what exactly is failing! I've no idea why I'm in a readonly
mode.. I can of course do a "mount -o -n remount,rw /"
but that won't tell me WHY this is happening..

If ANYONE can possibly give me a direction to look on
this, I'd really appreciate it. I'm even considering wiping it
and going back to 4.2, which gave me no trouble at all.
