I found out that if I delete the /etc/mtab
then called "mount -o remount,rw /dev/sda1 /"
it wrote the proper line into the mtab, and then
a reboot fixed the mtab problem.. How it got
hosed with boot-time information is STILL beyond
me.. I think my change of rc.sysinit from
">/etc/mtab" to "rm -f /etc/mtab" and "touch /etc/mtab"
may have done something to help, but I'm not sure..

I still don't see anything past the:
"Freeing usused kernel memory: 40k, 4k data"

and additionally, when I look in the "/var/log/dmesg"
file, the last line it reads is:

"Adding Swap: 50616K swap-space (priority -1)"

Which compares correctly to my other Linux
RH5.2 installation (Intel version)....

So I'm still in a quandry:

Why can't I see the init messages as it boots!?
Could this be a "linuxconf" problem?
