We just had the same trouble on an E4500.  You need
the kernel patches that support the 8MB of cache.

To load the OS (5/98) we did a stop-a as it was coming
up and then typed limit-ecache-size at the OK prompt.
Then after the OS was loaded and rebooting we
did another stop-a and again limit-ecache-size
at the OK prompt. And then we loaded the patches
No problems after that.
