HELP! Lost HD Memory!!!!!

Help!
I have been having a lot of memory problems lately.
Having a mere 40 meg HD, I have recently done my best to
transfer everything I own to Floppies that does not need
to be on the drive, and zippng some files that I dont use daily.
This included taking some of my window apps and even storing them on
floppies. BUT:

It didnt work! Believe it or not, It still says I have only 385K
of memory available, in both windows and dos.
it tells me 41.8M total, 385 available.
yet, in doing a directory by directory manual
addition of used memory, I only come up with 27.3M in use!!!
What the hell happened to my other 14 megs?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Derek

I'm not sure what you think the connection is between your hard drive
and your memory. Are you using Windows VM (permanent swap file)?

Fragmented to the point where Windows can't put a swap file on it?
I'm not sure what you think your problem really is, but you shouldn't
really expect to automagically see your hard drive reported as MEMORY.
The memory is on some of the little black rectangular things inside
the big box. ;-)

step number one is to do a chkdsk to check for lost clusters....

It looks like things are not clear.
40 MB is the Hard Disk space - This has nothing to do with memory. No
relationship...
When you add up the total entries in the directories I'm not sure that you
see the hidden files. If you have a swap file in windows this might be the
answer.

A couple of things to try:

1) run chkdsk /f - you might have lost clusters on your
disk (data with no associated file in the FAT)
2) look for files with the hidden attribute set (I think
	dir /a:h will do that)
3) if you have a permanent swap file under windows,
you might want to remove it.

My guess is the first option will work because dir is not
reporting the missing 14MB. Also, it avoids confusion if you
use 'disk space' for 'HD memory' (most people think RAM when
you say memory). Actually, rereading your post, I'm not sure
whether *you* know the difference (HD memory is not the same
as system RAM). I *hope* thats obvious.

Ok,
maybe I should clear up a few things.
I have done a chkdsk to make sure
everything is OK.
I forgot about the hidden files,
it says I have about 8 megs of them.
Isnt this a bit much?
Im mostly an applications kinda guy, so I dont know
much about configuration deals. Sorry.
When I meant memory, I was meaning HD bytes available for
storage.
For one thing, I had at least 3.5 Megs free about a week ago,
and the next thing I know I only have the 385K free.
I just dont know where it went. I was thinking something
along the lines of backups screwing things up or something.
Does windows do this? Thanks a million!

Derek

PS It's not just windows that I have this problem with,
Being in Dos does not free up any HD bytes.

Go thru your directories with a utility that shows hidden files. You most likley have a permanent swap file setup for 15-20 megs. If this is so go into the Main group and then the 386Enhanced options and then virtual memory and either set it up for a temporary swap file or make your permanant swap file smaller.

That rather depends on what they are.

Well, since it's almost assuredly an application causing this, does
that mean you don't need any more help? :-)

There are so many things it could be that it's useless to try to
speculate. I don't suppose you could give us the NAMES of that 8 MB
of hidden files you have?
