As the person who started this thread, I should clear up ambiguity someone found in my message. The original graphic was indeed brought in on a black & white scanner. I was trying to make a composite of a book's jacket for our editorial and marketing departments to approve. The halftone on the final printed version was to be printed in a PMS, not in black, so I was trying to assign a color to it for the HP color ink jet printer. Because the graphic was an EPS, I couldn't do this. It had to be a TIFF. As it happens, I decided I hated the graphic, whether it was black, red, gold, or avocado, and scrapped the design.
