| In order to have a single generic transformation program, vs a program
| for every DTD, they should be in the DTD. The "inferred" method would
| probably use the LINK feature of SGML. LINK is not widely supported at
| the current time but when it is, I expect that it will be used.
Jeff knows about this already, but other people may be interested in a
paper I wrote some time ago showing how the LINK feature could be used
to implement the SDA #FIXED attribute functionality, thereby maintaining
a clean separation between the structure of a document type and its
processing.
The URL is http://www.falch.no/~pepper/link.html.
It's true that LINK is not widely supported yet -- but it is available
in James Clark's new freely-distributable parser, sp.
At a seminar held by the Norwegian SGML Users' Group recently, James
also demonstrated how the DSSSL STTP (SGML Tree Transformation Process)
could be used even more effectively to achieve the same thing.
