OK, lets start with the style files. The names you see enclosed in
{}'s are intended to correspond to the font names to be used when
switching font styles with, for instance, \it. So, in order to be able
to use \it with this style, you need to have a font called "pplri"
around. What does that mean ? It means that you need to have (at
least) the TFM (TeX font metric) file "pplri.tfm" sitting in one of
the directories named by your TEXFONTS setting.

If you don't have this file, you have 3 options:

	1) perhaps you have another one that is the same font. Here,
our PostScript tfm's are called "PS-<family>-<style>",
and so the equivalent for "pplri" is "PS-Roman-Italic".

	2) perhaps you can get the relevant TFM files via ftp as well.
(don't ask me to send them to you - I won't).

	3) you can give up.

>Are these font styles only available for postscript output (using dvips)?

Yes. They can be used with several different DVI->PostScript
converters, including dvips. Normally, you also need a map file that
converts the names used by TeX (like "pplri") to PostScript names
(like TimesRomanItalic, or whatever). The DVI driver must know about
PostScript builtin's, ands simply use the map file to generate the
required PostScript font switch command. Other drivers will choke, and
complain that the font does not exist. The map file is normally in the
same directory as the TFM files; this is dependent on the driver.
Some DVI->PostScript drivers have a much more complex scheme than this.

>Or can I produce output on the screen, or my HP DeskJet printer?

I doubt it. I sometimes use GhostScript to look at the PostScript
result, but I don't know of any dvi previewer that can handle
PostScript fonts, because TeX itself doesn't use them.

Hoep this helps, a little.
