Problems with a4 and a4wide styles...

I have a document that I am trying to typeset on a4 paper. But LaTeX
leaves a disproportionately wide top margin and a bottom margin so
small that half the page number has gone off the page!
I suppose I can hack the a4 style description, but I'd rather not do
that if this is a common enough problem caused by something not being
done right.
Can anyone enlighten me on what to do please? This also happens with
the a4wide style and both in latex209 and latex2e using \usepackage{a4}
Email replies please, I can summarise if I get enough queries asking
me for solutions I have received.

I have just solved this exact same problem. My ``problem'' was that I
am using dvips / ghostscript (v4.03), and apparently ghostscript gets
the margins wrong. Latex'ing and printing the file ``testpage.tex''[1]
showed me by how much (17mm), so I changed the config.ps file to
include the line
O 0mm,-17mm
and all is now fine.
Hope this helps.
[1] In my teTeX distribution it was found in
.../teTeX/texmf/tex/latex/base/testpage.tex.
