LaTeX table numbering bug?

Using LaTeX and article style, I have figures that are consecutively
numbered and correctly referred to via "\ref". I have tables that
are independently consecutively numbered--so far, so good. But when
I refer to a table via "\ref{labeloftable}" I get the section or
subsection that "\ref" occurs in. Lamport's book says this is
supposed to happen in report and book style, but not in article.
Here, however, we get consecutive numbering in captions and something
else in referring to it.

Is this my problem, a bug in article.sty, or something else? Anyone
else see this problem?

Thanks in advance for your help.
