Multinational characters in DOC/16-Bit fonts ?

I've seen this question before, but no really satisfying answer.

I see, DOC uses adobe encoding. This allows different international
characters, but leaves out umlauts. (Someone at adobe seems to hate
germans :-)

I also noticed some support for 16-Bit characters (in the canvas class).
Could this be a hook to provide the required support?

I'm rather new to this problem, so any hint is welcome ( of course best
is a comment : Yes, it works :-)). My further hack doesn't work well
with Adobe fonts.

Thanks,
