Sometimes someone (in this case Bill Gates) is sent into our lives to
teach us patience...
I upgraded my W95 to W98: AOK (faster shut downs and a few other minor
advantages) then tried to download the latest Netscape 4.0 whatever...
Then it all happened. Got fatal error type messages every few minutes,
computer wouldn't talk to printer, Netscape wouldn't retain my
subscribed newsgroups, tried a defrag and the whole thing collapsed in
the middle of it.
Now a whole day and the help of two techos and many dollars later, I'm
still trying to get back to where I was... Just as well it's holidays.
I now subscribe to the common compliment 'Bill Gates is more committed
to success than excellence' ... My computer shop-guy told me they'd sold
just 12 Windows 98 upload CDs __and had problems with them all and now
refuse to sell 'em__...
Aaaargh...

As Cynthy posted a clean install can make your life MUCH easier.... I use Communicator daily. I would suggest on change.... You might make a emergency disk from your current Win98 setup. The Win98 emergency disk incorporates native CD-ROM support. After you have the diskette in hand, place it in the drive and boot with it. You will be asked With CD-ROM support. Choose it and insure your CD-ROM is supported. Another caveat, after reinstall you will have to run all setups for the programs to replace the DLL files and interface with Win98 so insure you have the original programs and activation keys. regards mrdata ========== :^) Rowland Croucher wrote: > Sometimes someone (in this case Bill Gates) is sent into our lives to > teach us patience... > > I upgraded my W95 to W98: AOK (faster shut downs and a few other minor > advantages) then tried to download the latest Netscape 4.0 whatever... > > Then it all happened. I have since done a format C: and done a clean install, but I did do a install over Windows 95 without an errors and or trouble spots. I think it depends on what crap you have in your registry and hardware in terms of what kind of problems you will have. You may have better luck reformatting your disk and installing W98 from scratch. I went down the upgrade path at work and had too many problems before I wiped it and started again. Now my system is (relatively) stable. Regards, David. --------------- David Clayton, e-mail: dcstar@acslink.aone.net.au Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. I've sold and or installed several hundred copies of Win98, and have found that, yes their are problems. The problems are nearly always related to hardware peripherals. Here's an example... If you have an Asus P5A-B motherboard, and use a STB Velocity AGP card, you have to update the BIOS to version 1.004 or later, install an AGP patch, and get an updated driver for the card. Without those three "fixes", the machine will give you all sorts of problems, which to a less experienced tech might seem to mean that Win98 is at fault. The only thing I tell people is to not use the Active Desktop because it does use a lot of resources, and unless you have a really compelling reason for using it (I can't think of one), and a really powerful machine, it can cause problems. Another thing is that it's a good idea to use the latest versions of whatever software you're using, newer hardware, and the latest drivers for all your devices. And once and for all, Netscape and IE4 will live together on the same system just fine. I have three machines at my disposal that prove it. Not one problem that can be even remotely blamed on IE4 not liking Netscape. The fact is, in every case of a Win 98 install having problems, it has been related to a hardware issue such as bad RAM (Win98 is very picky). I'm a day late and a dollar short on this, but here is my $.02 worth ... A very similar thing happened to me on my kid's computer. I attempted to re-install Win95 because I became so frustrated with Win98, but it exhibited similar problems too. I finally discovered that I had a heat problem inside of the case. Win98 (95 too) makes the cd-rom and hard drive spin alot for a long time when being installed ... and more heat is generated than normal. Once I opened the case and pointed a floor fan inside, then everything went smooth as silk. Also, I did what everybody else has already said ... a clean install of Win98.
