Steve,
I downloaded V.041 yesterday and attempted to install it tonite. I
finally noticed something curious that was always there, but didn't
register before. Before MAKENEO was run, DOS showed 23,740,416 bytes
total disk space on my drive F: (NOTE: I was unable to run NEOCHECK
F: -- it kept saying "unable to open data file on F:" or words to that
effect.) I then ran MAKENEO 0 F: F: That ran ok, and then I made sure
that the new NEODISK was available in the boot drive. I then rebooted
with the statement in AUTOEXEC.BAT un-rem'd; C:\NEODISK.EXE f: -o
The boot up routine, when it got to the NEODISK statement, reported
47,465,472 bytes available, 4,304,896 (9.0%) bytes used (!!??), and
43,160,576 bytes free. I haven't loaded anything onto the drive! Where
did this "data" come from? Running a DIR shows nothing. This made me
realize that I was getting the same information when the drive was full
of data - about 22 megs worth. Did I show that in the data file I sent
to you? I can't remember.
Next I tried to RESTORE the files to the drive, and the RESTORE failed
very early in the first disk (out of 13 disks). I thought it was a
problem with PCTOOLS' CPBACKUP (Version 7.1), but it just occurred to me
that maybe there is something fishy with the NEODISK.F file, so I will
go back and attempt to RESTORE to another partition. I will be back!!
Later..........
Well, it's a good thing I went back and tested that. The backup was
just fine. I cannot write to the new NEODISK file. I ended up putting
back V.031, and then was able to do a full RESTORE. Also, when NEODISK
started up in AUTOEXEC.BAT, it showed 0 bytes used, (0.0%), 47,465,472
bytes available.
You know, when I said, above, that the RESTORE failed, it really
"switched off" very suddenly. I tried it several times. When the
RESTORE program reached track 41 on the first disk, PCTOOLS instantly
switched back to the main menu (DOS version). In the WINDOWS version,
it switched off WINDOWS! and went back to DOS - I mean instantly!! like
a light switch.
Regards,
Todd
