Sorry, this question is probably a FAQ, but it's driving me crazy!

I have the following:

XAPPLRESDIR=/home/elan/PROJECTS/motif/defaults/

I have the right names for the resource files, capital letters and everything.
Yet it refuses to load the resources.  Any ideas?  It works fine when I put
the files in /usr/lib/X11/app-defaults.
