2D stuff using PEX?

Is it possible to use a 2D imaging model under PEX? PEX's advantage over X lies not only in 3D processing, it lies in display-list processing on the server. Lots of CAD drafting tools have use for 3D viewing only when doing 3D imaging, with most of the intense work being done in 2D mode. There used to be "smart" graphics terminals (such as the Tek4125) that did local display list processing, pan and zoom, etc. -- The 3D stuff was then the expensive icing, not always needed. These terminals, when hooked up to a serial line will still outperform current vanilla-X terminals when doing pan and zoom operations on complex 2D drawings. 3D processing is much more expensive than 2D processing is. A trasformation requires roughly 2 times the calculations. This means a "2D PEX server" could draw a 2D display at least twice as fast as a "3D PEX server". Any comments? -- -------------------------------------------------------------------- -- Gil Tene "Some days it just doesn't pay - -- devil@imp.HellNet.org to go to sleep in the morning." - -- devil@diablery.10A.com - --------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm not sure if you're arguing for explicit 2D display lists to achieve performance, or a separate "2D PEX" extension. From all the problems existing subsetting has caused, I doubt if anyone is going to lobby for a 2D subset of PEX, or a new 2D extension to support display lists. However, the structure element mechanism could be extended to support X primitives. How useful this would be given that X primitives are all in device coordinates, I'm not sure. -- Rich -- Repeal the personal income tax; vote Libertarian in 1992. When we first started out designing PEX I stated that its largest initial
following would come from the 2D "deferred graphics" folks in ECAD, defense,
air traffic control and such. (You know... the GKS users of the world! 8-)
I maintain thats will be the case even as MCAD vendors scramble to prove
their implementations on PEX-capable interfaces. (Of course many of them
got that capability for "free!")
While I haven't seen many of these applications commercially yet, you can
bet that they and hundreds of hip-pocket 2D "tools" are on their way....
