xgif and interlaced GIF images

I am currently using xgif to display GIF images under X windows.
All works well except that several GIF files I have are "interlaced"
which causes xgif to fail miserably.  It appears that the GIF decode
logic does not handle interlaced images properly.  Does anyone
have a patch to fix this?  I have the xgif source code.

ALso, where does one find the spec for the GIF file format?
I think this subject came up before but I can't find it in a FAQ.
