/*--------------------------------------------------------------------* * SunOS devGUIDE and Apple Macintosh MacX * *--------------------------------------------------------------------*/ I am new to posting news so please excuse any lapses in proper etiquette. I am working to develop X based applications on SunOS using devGUIDE 1.1. I will be moving to devGUIDE 3.0 when we get our copy. The applications I develop will have to run on Sun's and display via X Server software on Mac's and PC's in both Color and Black and White modes. I am having difficulties getting my Open Look and Feel (thanks devGUIDE :-)) X application to run as expected on my Mac IIfx (MacOS System 7.0) with the MacX server (version 1.1.7). My Mac has 20Mb of RAM and 4MB has been allocated to run MacX. I am running Sun's olwm as the Window Manager in MacX (this seems to work OK) so I can get all of the look and feel of Open Look. All client applications are displayed in a Color-Rooted MacX window. The 2 major problems I'm having deal with color differences and the physical size of the GUI on the Mac screen. /*----------------* * Problem #1 * *----------------*/ First, the physical size differences. It seems that when my application displays on the Mac (under MacX and the olwm) it's GUI is physically larger than when it displays on my Sun IPC. I suspect this has to do with the differences in resolution of the 2 monitors. The monitor on my IPC is a standard Sony 16" Color and the monitor on my Mac is an E-Machines 16" Color (1 Page). Both machines are running 8 bit color (256 colors). This problem is quite annoying and has got me puzzled. Any thoughts on how to guarantee that the GUIS will be the same size on both machines (and evetually on a PC X Server, maybe Hummingbird) would be greatly appreciated. One other thing I've noticed regarding size differences is that under olwm I'm unable to resize a window (by grabbing a corner) and have it scale up/down the contents of the window. What I get is a larger or smaller window but everything in it (buttons, sliders, panes, etc...) is the original size. Is this correct? This seems like a pretty basic requirement of all GUIS. Is this something that was omitted in olwm or will I have to provide that function in each of my application GUIs? Will devGUIDE generate the code for me? /*----------------* * Problem #2 * *----------------*/ Second problem. I am building color GUIS with devGUIDE ( although the colors are only used for GUI elements (backgrounds, etc...) and I'm unable to get them to display with the correct colors under MacX. I have been using Salmon and Turquoise as the colors. I have managed to track down a few differences between SunOS/devGUIDE's color model (MIT X11?) and that of MacX. It seems that all colors in MIT X11 are based on RGB value between 0-255. On the Mac under MacX the RGB color range is between 0-65535. The RGB value for Salmon on the Sun side is 250 128 114. The RGB value for Salmon on the MacX side is 48640 26624 19968. The actual color that displays on the MacX side is Black instead of Salmon. I tried using the Color Editor in MacX to enter the Sun's version of Salmon and I ended up with Black. I guess this makes sense given the RGB values of 250 128 114 on a scale of 0-65535. Nevertheless, I'm confused. I would think that the colors that are displayed would be looked up by NAME (Salmon and Turquoise) rather than by hard coded RGB values. Am I wrong? Am I headed in the right direction? Am I lost?? I would really appreciate any help you might be able to give me. A solution to the problems would be ideal. But if not, maybe some direction on who to talk to or what to try next. If you respond could you please send me a copy of your response via email. I have to log on to a different machine to read news and I often forget. I really would appreciate it. If there are any other developers out there pursuing similar projects I'd love to discuss them with you. I'll gladly respond to email or phone calls.
