Getting a list of all visible windows on the screen

Hi everyone,

I am writing a program at university where I'm trying to get a list of
all visible windows on an X server.

I use XQueryTree with the root window as the window for which I want to
retrieve the children. Resulting is a list of many windows.

When I looked deeply into this list, I saw that there are far more many
windows in the list than the number of those I see on the screen. I
realized that XQueryTree returns the ONE LEVEL children of the root
window and that rarely a window which is visible, is a one level child
of the root window. That is the windows which I need to get their ID's
are rarely in the list from XQueryTree.

What I would like to ask is:
1) what are all those windows that do appear in the list but not on the
screen?
2) How do I get more than ONE LVEL children with XQueryTree (I guess I
have to recurse ...)?
3) How do I know if a window is visible on the screen. What is common to
all visible windows? How can I diffrenciate between them and others?

Thank you all in advance,
Cheers,
Shuky Rosinger,
