Folks, Some people from my company are at a customers site and are having much trouble with xdm. Seems all is fine when using any one x-terminal. One can login/logout many times with no problem. But it seems that once another x-terminal is brought up, within about 10-20 login cycles xdm will hang for BOTH of the x-terminals !!! Specifically it seems like xstart is not being run. Scologin seems OK in that it can still detect when an illegal account name/password is detected, but once a legal login is done all is quiet. Messages to disk in startx never get out, seemingly implicating the scologin/startx interface. Also, hitting F1 on a correct login hangs as well. The xdmerrors/xerrors file is empty and with open protection. This is a real head scratcher, it would be great if anybody has heard of problems like this. The environment: OS: sco/odt 3.0 X-terminal: NCD MCX (not the windows based s/w product) Many thanks for any help, Denis denis@std.com +1.508.262.3506

(20% Networktraffic with not very much datatransfer(small pakets)). But on our old Sun 3/80 running suos 4.1.1 which start at the end of the rc.local an X11R5 (MIT) Server with "X -fp ... -query server" we have no problems like the sun terminal. I often use some RS6000 (with 8MB ram) as X terminal to our sun cluster. (X11R5 from IBM) and have only sometimes problems with hanging xdm, if i kill the X server on the RS6000 in a session. (startup >exec X -query server). So only our X Terminal from Sun makes problems with the xdm X11R6. -Oliver (email scher@informatik.uni-freiburg.de )

I should know the answer to this problem; but I never wrote it down and now I forgot :( At one time, I thought it was a problem with scologin, and recommended to those affected to try stock MIT xdm (which we use here anyway, ripped from a previous version of ODT). For now, check to make sure that you are NOT listing the Xterminals in some kind of Xservers file on the host (typically /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers, but is something else in sco using scologin). XDMCP replaces the Xservers file, which is long obsolete (for everything except starting XDM on the console Xserver). We have been running several Xterminals on our network for quite some time now, and have never had XDM hang or otherwise cause any problems. BUt on the product it does. There are no entries in the Xserver file, so thats not the problem. With Xconfig: DisplayManager*debugLevel: 1 set up is applears to hang during the password verification.
