I downloaded a demo that was in a InstallShield self extracting .exe form
and it just wouldn't open, I've tried many other programs I have downloaded
off the internet and the InstallShield self extracting .exe just wont open,
so i tryed to running some programs I allreddy had installed like adaptec
EZ-SCSI that I knew used the InstallShield Installation prossess I double
clicked on SETUP.EXE and it did nothing, it doesnt start or open, I'm
getting the same results as with ALL product using installshield No progress
bar, NOerror message, nothing. All I get is the mouse cursor changes to an
hourglass for a second.
I'm running WinNT 4 sp4 VIRUS CLEAN.

The one and only thing that spings to mind is that I had a TROJAN recently
that may have deleted a few system files? is there a registry entry I can
delete?

any idea's I can't install anything!!! HELP

Virus? That could be it.
Also I have heard of the 16-bit subsystem on the NT that could be disabled.
Most of the IS setup.exe are 16-bit (till recently) So I have seen NT boxes
on which the 16-bit setup.exe would run and nothing would happen. Check for
the file version and size of setup.exe
and let me know. I can probably send you a tiny project that has 32-bit
setup.exe
However, it sounds like the virus is causing it.
have you reinstall Windows? or SP?

Right yes I'll check the size etc.. I've re-installed SP4 but was a little
reluctant to re-install NT itself.
I may have to try though :o(

David,

Make sure no other applications are running in the background. I've had
similar problems before in which a setup that worked earlier would have the
same behavior as you are describing.

It sounds to me that your 16bit subsystem has been disabled either by the
trojan or
another program. Reinstalling SP4 sounds like a good idea.

David: Before trashing your entire system, make sure you aren't running any
mail programs. There's been numerous reports of programs like Outlook,
Eudora etc 'hogging' the Windows messaging queue. It seems just a touch
strange that double clicking on an .exe produces NO results or messages at
all. Try looking at the Task Manager once you've double clicked on it to see
if it's launched a new process. If you HAVE got mail programs running, make
sure you've closed them before running a setup.

I just headed into the same problem.
After closing the process 'realplayer' in the NT task manager the
installation worked fine.
So just try closing any process not necessary to run NT before
reinstalling NT or SP4.
