Gosh, you mean it didn't just SLIP right in? You couldn't possibly be anywhere
near as arrogant as the average University Terminal Server, no way. I, too,
have to deal with an Annex terminal server. I run DNet to a number of Sun4
machines on the other side of the Annex, and the blasted Annex is worse than
a randomly initialized AI program. When it wants to do me in, it will pass
downloads with getfiles from the Amiga or putfiles from the Unix csh, but for
uploads, it puts up the required server, then goes into an endless loop of
announcing the same set of three or four checksum errors, waiting ten seconds,
then trying again with the same result. This is the case for either getfiles
from the Unix machine, or putfiles from the Amiga. There are two consistent
things about this that make me think that the terminal server is the culprit.
If I ask for a 7-bit path with Xon-Xoff flow control as "dnet -X -P1 -Z0 -m1"
it works ok for both uploads and downloads. But for "dnet -X -P0 -Z0 -m0 -8"
sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. The server doesn't understand
commands like "login goose -8 -l snarfy"; and the help screen doesn't say a
word about path width. Whether I get the 8-bit path I ask for seems to go
more or less according to time of day or system loading, with the lower port
numbers being more likely to succeed. I've been thinking about trying SLIP
to get around these problems, but from what you imply, I may need to try
some other approach.
A thorough discussion/guide for installation of Amiga NOS and dealing with
terminal servers is needed as an FAQ somewhere, and soon, if you please...
(It may even be needed if you don't please). So if you and Dan Zerkle will
send me what you have, I can add my 2 cents for DNet, and we should have a
fairly good net article, possibly for use as an FAQ... Thanks!
Best Regards, Howard Hull
