Probably you need the latest software updates from Microsoft to get
Sidewinder 3D Pro connect. At least in Windows98 - Windows98SE.
Install the latest gaming software updates and you should regain Sidewinder
3D Pro connected in digital mode like it should.

You need to install the following two updates from Microsoft hardware
downloads page:
Game Controller Software Version 3.02    THEN    Sidewinder 3D Pro Patch.
Also make sure the switch under base is set to the one-dot (digital mode)
position.
