SB16 hanging my machine

I have been given a PC with an Intel Penitum Pro 200Mhz processor. This
sits on a motherboard with the Intel FX chipset. The only cards installed
are an S3 Trio64V+ 1Mb PCI video card and a SoundBlaster 16 Pro CSP ISA card
(model CT2290). The problem is that I cannot get the SoundBlaster to work
with Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0 (it will work if OS/2 Warp 4 is
installed). As soon as the PC sees the soundcard the whole system hangs.
The hardware settings are unused by anything else (IO 220, IRQ5, DMA1,
HDMA5, IO300) and I have used the latest SB16 drivers from the site.

The problem seems to go away if I first boot to a command prompt and remove
the c:\windows\system\sbfm.drv and sb16.drv files. The sound card is still
detected (ie appears in the Win98 device manager) but obviously does not
play sounds. I cannot replace the card as I cannot see a way to get at it.

I think it may be something to do with the Pentium Pro processor. Please
can someone help?

Kind regards

Rob.
