ModemBlaster and SBLive folks, Here's the situation (This thread originated in the ModemBlaster newsgroup). Jarhead, sent me a log file and some of the other folks sent some good clues. I'm confident my script file is right. It produces identical logs to Jarhead's (he gets good fast connections using the same model) but...It connects only at 28.8KB (good throughput for that speed - just under 3KB/Sec). Now I can hear the handshake (I'm using the SBLiveMP3+ card and it has its own volume controls which don't show up in the task bar - TAD input needed to be unmuted and turned up). So, immediately after dialing, a very strange thing happens. The handshake tones seem to get chopped off (each chop is associated with a considerable "pop" coming through the speakers via the SBLiveMP3+ (the same sound you get when the sound card "wakes up" just before WIN98 asks for a password on startup or if you quickly unplug a hot mike without turning anything down). I hear a very brief tone followed by a pop, followed by another tone, followed by a pop etc. until finally (presumably V90 and every other highspeed protocol has been abandoned at that point) it settles down and starts to sound like modem sounds we all recognize and gives me a 28.8 connection. The "tone/pop/tone/pop/tone/pop/begin normal handshake" sequence happens really fast. It kind of sounds like musical popcorn. Question: What the heck is going on with the handshake? Is there some kind of ModemBlaster Vs. SBLive TAD incompatibility or install problem? Are these powerful "pops" normal for Creative products? I've got no other complaints with the SBLive and it does everything else that I demand of it (I'm not a serious musician, just a guy who plays the occasional CD, MP3, audio stream, or game). I'm wondering if these pops are disturbing the modem's normal handshaking process. Any clues will be carefully considered and much appreciated. BTW why can't the folks from EMU teach the folks who build these cards about "quiet, bounceless" audio power switching? I cringe every time the tiny, solid-state amp in my little speaker system gets hammered by the sound card. There is no way on Earth that I'd hook this gear up to an expensive mixer, amp, etc. The musicians who use this stuff with their expensive "axes" deserve much credit and respect for the risks they take as the pioneers of low-budget, PC-aided musicianship.
